Facebook GreaseMonkey Scripts for a better view in
Firefox.
Was scoping out my Twitter feed when I noted a tweet that I follow from
Atul Arora. The link went to a
Jeff Smith’s blog that discussed Facebook tweaks with GreaseMonkey.
GreaseMonkey allows you to customize the way a webpage displays using small bits of JavaScript. Hundreds of scripts, for a wide variety of popular sites, are
already available and you can write your own scripts too. Check out http://wiki.greasespot.net/ to get started.
First, I installed the GreaseMonkey addin by going to
GreaseMonkey
and selecting the Add to Firefox button. Then, I added the
Remove All Facebook Ads
script which removes any and all ads from the Facebook pages that you view. To install the script, simply browse to the
script page and select the Install button in the upper-right hand corner of the page.
Here is an image of my view before installing the script. Note the ad tech
ad in the right-hand column:
Here is the view after the script. "See mom, no ads!":
Next I installed the
Facebook Fixer - Enhancements for Facebook
script. This script provides bigger profile pictures and photos, easier viewing of albums, links to download videos, showing people's age,
Google calendar integration, keyboard shortcuts & more. It is compatible with the new Facebook layout and is fully customizable! One of the nice features of this script is that it moves
the News Feed and other filter list items to the lower-right column. Here is the
view from the top of the page. Note no News Feed etc. to the left!

Finally, a really nice feature is the ability to mouse over the thumbnail images
and see a display of the full scale image! In the view below I placed my mouse
on the thumbnail of this beautiful baby and voilà, the large image to the left
appeared. No more having to click on an image to see the full size!
In conclusion, as you can see these scripts, in my view (no pun intended), make the Facebook
experience better.
